thursday, january 24th, 2013. >> good morning, everyone. welcome to "today" on a thursday morning. i'm savannah guthrie. >> i'm matt lauer. let's get right to this story in washington, the decision to allow women in combat roles, a watershed moment being praised by a lot of people and others starting to wonder how it might impact the capability of other forces. >> we all know women have been putting their lives in dangerous war zones for many years. what does this change really mean for a practical matter? this straight ahead. also, are you sitting in a room with your computer on right now. take a look because some 1 could be spying on you at this moment,

full-fledged combat infantry. for the past ten years, u.s. military women have served in the front lines in both iraq and afghanistan, but never as ground combat troops. lifting the 20 year ban against women in combat will ultimately put them directly into the heat of battle, opening more than 230,000 ground combat jobs to women. they'll gradually work their way through training to become combat infantry troops and could even serve in special operations forces. but is the military prepared for women in combat? >> my personal opinion, no, women should not be allowed in the infantry unit. there is men who have extremely hard time physically and emotionally in infantry unit. >> over a decade of war in iraq and afghanistan with no clear battle line, female soldiers and marines were caught up in the fight. 152 women were killed and more than 800 wounded. >> congressman tammy duckworth

7:07 am
college wrote about this. ground leaders and former combat leaders agree the precious and indefinable band of brothers effect so essential to winning in close combat would be irreparably compromised with mixed gender infantry squads. how do you feel about that? >> i think it's already been disproved because operating bases have been attacked and women fought alongside men. when people are trying ardently to kill you, it really doesn't matter who is on your left or right as long as they're doing their job. we fight to accomplish the mission. we fight for the country and most of all, we fight for each other. >> congress will have the final say on this. what do you think the reaction there will be. >> they will also be negative about it. this is interesting, panetta is leaving this legacy for hagel to pick up and we will hear plenty about it when hagel gets grilled by the senate. i think hagel has no answer at the moment because it's a

online and get to the point where they feel romantically link to that person even though they've never met that person? >> teens in our generation are so used to the internet and grew up in live chat rooms, talking to strangers meeting people our parents probably tell us to stay away from. as teens, you know, we're so used to that, that euroing i dok it's at all strange. >> this doesn't shock you that this guy thought he had a girlfriend and never met her. >> unfortunately, no. >> sam. >> what's different about our generation we don't group online relationships and interpersonal relationships differently and think they're the same thing. we talk to someone online, text th them, e -mail them. >> talking about a girlfriend. would either of you label someone online a girlfriend or boyfriend you never met in person? >> absolutely not.

them and calling them and know where they are. >> there are ground rules, you will call me three times a day or reachable three times a day. >> exactly, set these ground rules. keep in mind, i don't think there's a set age or set grade a parent will say this is a time you can go on spring break without your family. it's kind of a family decision. you should talk about it. my friends and i sort of organized this and we decided to compromise. my girlfriends and i went on a trip with our 340moms. >> 93% who responded to our survey said, yes. parents need to set ground rules. is a negotiations appropriate here, doc? >> sure. you have two teenagers basically saying we want the rules. everybody knows what the expectations are going in is what's important. how often do they have to call? what is the expectation of their behavior. >> zero alcohol tolerance policy. >> great to put on the table. how can you enforce that if you're not there. if you know alcohol is going to be present, faulk about how to

there are amazing white beans, on the weekend, put them in water overnight but you don't have time during the week. >> could you use any sausage you wanted. >> i add spice to it. this is for fresh chorizo. the spanish one is skinnier, has more flavor in terms of that spice. this is like garlic and chiles. you can use i ttalian sausage a the one thing about sausage someone else did the work putting in all the flavor. >> i like it. you have simmering over here. >> exactly. baby spinach from the supermarket. you fold that in and that chorizo you sliced up, dump it right in. >> sure. >> this will wilt down pretty quickly. this is more of a stew than soup, i guess. it's healthy. you have your veg, beans and

meat and all-in-one skillet. not too much to clean up. i feel like you could handle this. >> i actually feel i could handle this, shockingly. how long do you cook this? >> just until the spinach wilts down which is happening particularly slowly right now. spoon it into bowls. this looks more like a salad than a soup. >> we can wait. >> trust me on this. >> i do. i totally trust you. you have another recipe, we won't go through the whole process, basically, you're using the same white beans. >> the same white beans again. if you don't eat meat and feeling lighter, onion and celery and garlic and canned tomato and fresh tomatoes and white beans. for the last 10 minutes, put in soup pasta, which have amazing names. farfilini. >> you had me at farfilini. and the gang is here. i don't think it's terribly

back with more on today on this thursday morning, the 24th day of january, 2013. nice to see heart and souls out there on the plaza braving another cold day. mostly jason kennedy. >> the fan club. >> exactly. >> so nice. >> three who showed up. inside studio 1a i am willie geist with savannah, al, and natalie morales. right to today's take 3. take one, hillary clinton on capitol hill yesterday testifying before air senate panel about the attacks in benghazi, libya, september 11th of this year, highly charged afternoon. a lot of emotion on both sides
9:01 am
from the questioners and secretary clinton herself. let's watch. >> i stood next to president obama as the marines carried those flag-draped caskets off the plane at andrews. i put my arms around the mothers and fathers, the sisters and brothers, the sons and daughters and the wives left alone to raise their children. >> so obviously getting emotional there talking about >> so obviously, getting emotional there, talking about the families and the people that didn't come home, the four of them. some people have zeroed in on the emotion, probably should be more focused on the content of the hearings. but people asking the question not just of hillary clinton, but of public figures, what it means to cry in public, whether or not that's a good idea. >> well, and this is very personal, as she said. you know, these are people that she knew well and, you know, i think, it's a tough decision to be in, if she was speaking passionately about, you know, that heat of the moment and
9:02 am
also, you know, i think she just lost those people, so that was true emotion. >> i think it's probably not as much a stigma anymore, for public figures crying from time to time. this is not someone crying all the time. this is probably the most emotional we'll ever seen her. john boehner, the speaker of the house, has been known to cry and get emotional quite a bit. i don't know if it's -- i think it used to be more of an issue when somebody would show the that kind of emotion. >> and it depends on the situation. when president obama was talking about the tragedy in connecticut, this is a man who's a father, and, you know, and the leader of our country. you know, to see that emotion, i don't think there's anything wrong with that. >> i don't think it's a problem when it comes from a place of sinceri sincerity. when it's political and calculated, that's when it brings us to some problems. jason, somebody does something wrong, they do the mandatory sit-down interview, they show tears, they think by becoming a little bit more vulnerable, opening themselves up, maybe the public will forgive them.
9:03 am
>> i thought back to 2007, right after kanye west lost his mother, he was in paris, he decided to go on with the concert, go on stage, and he could not get through the song at all. literally, he left the stage for 10 to 15 minutes. so it was a very emotional moment and understandably so for him. and chris brown at the b.e.t. rewards, he lost it, but chris had gone through a lot before that performance, so maybe he was thinking about his past. but i like it. you can relate to people more when you see that side of them. >> what about people who are seeking forgiveness. let's take lance armstrong sitting down with oprah. he knew he had to show that he was sorry in some way. that it impacted him, that it hurt him, that he knows he hurt other people. does he think going into that, i better have a crying moment. or am i too cynical? >> i just think if i go in, thinking i better manufacture some emotion for public consumption, it's probably not going to go well.
9:04 am
>> it's like that broadcast news moment, right, when he turns the camera on himself and he has the crocodile tears coming down. people know when it's real and when it's not real. and i think in hillary clinton's case, it was very much real. >> well, some very real emotion at the australian open yesterday. 15-time grand slam singles champ serena williams was faces off against this new sensation, american 19-year-old sloan stevens. more on her in a minute. sloan defeated serena williams, and in the of the match, serena showing frustration, after a changeover, slamming her racket down. >> not once. >> making sure she broke it, and then firing it toward the bench. some people say bad sportsmanship, and others say, i think i agree with this side, she was competitive, she was mad at herself, she wasn't throwing it at her opponent, she wasn't showing up her opponent. what do you think? >> and we've seen this before. >> john mcenroe. >> he had throw it at the judge. >> i don't know. i mean, i love tennis, it's my
9:05 am
favorite sport, i love serena. i don't think it's great sportsmanship, but it's not that i don't understand or can't relate to. you know, tennis, the words that come out of my mouth, it's very frustrating. >> sometimes i thought about, if i were a professional tennis player, they could never do a tight shot on my face, because you could read my lips and all the curse words that are like flowing. because it's so frustrating. i can relate, but i wish that she hadn't, because it's a real exciting moment for this young player, who was able to defeat her idol. >> and she didn't curse. serena didn't curse. she just slammed her racket. she was going through it. she'd hurt her back, she lost her serve, she was limping, and it didn't bother me at all. >> it was not like she was lip syncing the serve. >> these are really competitive folks. that's how they get to be so good. i get that. i understand that. >> she has had a moment in the past where she offered to do something with a tennis ball to the line judge. she has had her moments. >> i think they've all had hair moments. when you play competitive

sports. >> when you're a golfer, you're attempted to throw that club. >> fifth grade, broke it over a tree, dad did not buy me a new one. >> you learned your lesson. >> a little happier sports story for our take three, great sportsmanship story here. talking about a spanish runner, had a chance to win a big cross-country race, but he chose to do the right thing instead. here's what happened. he was in second place behind the man you see in front there, kenyan athlete, the kenyan athlete mistakenly stopped because he thought the race had ended, ten meters sooner than it actually did, and if you look there, he did the right thing, he slowed up, told that the race had ten more peters to go, and let him win. he told a newspaper, quote, i did not deserve to win it, i did what i had to do, he was the rightful winner. i guess we all hope we would do the same thing in that position. >> i would not do the same thing. if it was a charity event, that's one thing -- >> you're a terrible person. you broke your golf club, what else. >> if it's a charity event,

that's one thing. but if you are competing and stuff, i would run by him and say, hey, it's still going on, buddy, you've got to keep going this way, but i would blow right by the guy. >> run backwards and taunt him a little bit? >> ryan seacrest, take note, you know, jason's behind you. >> just trying to be honest. >> i think, it is a tough call. because it is -- you know, most likely, there's a big prize at the end, i mean, some big award. >> if it was the olympics, would you honestly do that, you guys? >> would we honestly be even there? >> yeah. >> let's get with reality. >> she's not going to do professional tennis. >> but look at this, we are questioning -- >> i think it's nice. >> someone doing the right thing. >> only jason is. >> he's great. i just said i wouldn't do it. >> okay. all right. so we know, you're a horrible -- >> that worked out great. you're a bad guy, jason, but we love you anyway. >> okay, you can come back.
